The Kiltiernan Group Water Scheme Co Operative Society Limited is owned by the members to whom we supply water. Each member is a shareholder and they votes each year to elect a board of Directors to run the scheme. The scheme is a non profit organization and the Board of Directors performs their task on a voluentry basis. One of the corner stone decisions taken by the Board was to hire a manager to run the day to day operations of the scheme. It was accepted that tight control over water metering, billing and quality control was a task that over reached the long term commitment that elected voulinteers could comit too with the required vigor on a long term basis. This is a decision that has paid dividence and has resulted in a very professionally run business allowing us to supply a quality product with a confidence that it complies with the various drinking water regulations.
Glan Agua is responsible for operating the process plant while the scheme members (via the board of Directors) are responsible for the distribution infrastructure which extends from the gates of the processing plant too and including the meter box of the consumer. It is our responsibility to ensure water losses from the system are eliminated and we achieve this through monitoring the customer consumption versus the volume of water leaving the processing plant.Distribution Pipeline of Kiltiernan Group Water Scheme

The management of these substances is in the hands of organisations responsible for the provision of the supply, and it is up to these organisations to instil in their consumers the confidence that this task is being undertaken with responsibility and efficiency.’
The extract above is form the World Health Organisation and really encapsulates what the requirements and expectations from the Board of Directors are. More over people expect and deserve such assurances when they turn on their taps.
We achieve this through regular scouring of our pipe lines, checking for residual chlorine and independent chemical analysis on the water. The results we gather from our on-going quality inspection are viewed in tandem with the results gathered by Glan Agua. We carefully monitor any negatively trending parameters and investigate the trending even it is still within the regulatory guidelines. It is in our interest to pre-empt the water quality and understand how the change in weather or volume consumed can affect this.
I would like to encourage all the shareholders / members of our scheme to play a larger role in the running of our scheme. As with any business there are many skillsets required to ensure a smooth running and efficiency. Your contribution can simply take the form of attending the annual general meeting, helping your neighbour in times of trouble with frozen pipes or leaks or you can contribute on a more direct level. By this I mean submitting your name for election to the board or by volunteering your time or skills to the scheme. If you are interested please contact the chairman of the scheme.
Communication with our members is very important and any concerns brought to our attention are investigated. Concerns varying from water colour, taste, smell, excessive chlorine and so on are all valid issues and we will work with Galway County Council or our engineers to ensure a root cause is found. The fact that a new dish washer detergent in the customers own house may be responsible for water taste is not important. What is important is that each of our members takes a proactive part in ensuring our water quality maintains its excellent quality.
Safety risks exist outside the confines of water quality and before we can be capable of addressing these we must be able to identify them. We developed a Safety Statement which is regularly reviewed and this assists us in determining the best practice required to complete a job. The scheme employs a manager so we are bound by the various employment laws and regulations. As with any employer we have a responsibility to the safety of our employees that extends from bullying and harassment to ensuring appropriate training is provided where necessary. We have a responsibility to the public to ensure our activities do not endanger them, activities such as meter readings or while carry out line maintenance. Sample Report:Explanation of the curent water status The quality of the water distributed throughout our scheme is of paramount importance to us and is not something that is left to chance. A highly sophisticated processing plant continuously monitors the water quality extracted from the ground and ensures that the water leaving the treatment plant is of a standard fit for human consumption and in compliance with the various water standards and regulations that we are required to adhere to. Once the water leaves the treatment plant we continue to monitor the water quality to ensure the quality of the water has not been compromised. This is achieved through regular chlorine residual testing. We scour the pipe line regularly to keep it clean and in addition to this chemical and bacterial analysis tests are taken by us and the Galway County Council and tested independently. - The simple definition of water hardness is the amount of dissolved calcium and magnesium in the water. Hard water is high in dissolved minerals, largely calcium and magnesium. You may have felt the effects of hard water, literally, the last time you washed your hands. Depending on the hardness of your water, after using soap to wash you may have felt like there was a film of residue left on your hands. In hard water, soap reacts with the calcium (which is relatively high in hard water) to form "soap scum". When using hard water, more soap or detergent is needed to get things clean, be it your hands, hair, or your laundry.Have you done a load of dishes in the dishwasher, taken out the glasses, and noticed spots or film on them? This is more hard-water residue—not dangerous, but unsightly. Many industrial and domestic water users are concerned about the hardness of their water. When hard water is heated, such as in a home water heater, solid deposits of calcium carbonate can form. This scale can reduce the life of equipment, raise the costs of heating the water, lower the efficiency of electric water heaters, and clog pipes. And, yes, mineral buildup will occur in your home coffee maker too, which is why some people occasionally run vinegar (an acid) through the pot. The acidity of vinegar helps to dissolve mineral particles by making them charged. These newly charged particles become attracted to the positive and negative charges in water and can be washed away easily. But hard water can have some benefits, too. Humans need minerals to stay healthy, and the World Health Organization states that drinking-water may be a contributor of calcium and magnesium in the diet and could be important for those who are marginal for calcium and magnesium intake.
